An expert Egyptologist guide and private driver will pick you up from your hotel in Cairo for a full-day excursion to Alexandria, the Mediterranean coastal city founded by Alexander the Great in 331 BC.
Upon arrival, visit the Catacombs of Kom El-Shoqafa, a three-level necropolis dating back to the 2nd century AD. The catacombs feature a unique blend of Egyptian, Greek, and Roman architectural styles and are considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Middle Ages.
Next, visit Pompey’s Pillar, a massive granite column built in honor of the Roman Emperor Diocletian. It is the largest column of its kind constructed outside the imperial capitals of Rome and Constantinople.
Continue to the Roman Theater, a well-preserved marble theater from the Roman period in Egypt, which once seated up to 800 spectators. The site is surrounded by Roman baths, villas with galleries, mosaic floors, and the remains of a pleasure garden.
Afterwards, drive to the 15th-century Citadel of Qaitbay, located on the Mediterranean coast. The citadel was built on the exact site of the ancient Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
Next, visit the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, a striking modern landmark inspired by the ancient Library of Alexandria. You will have free time to explore the library (entrance fee not included), while your guide provides insight into its architectural design and cultural significance.
At the end of the tour, you will be transferred back to your hotel in Cairo.
